May 23, 2008 – In the last couple of years a lot of books have been published on the topic of what to do before you die…
You know, like, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die: A Traveler’s Life

Or, Unforgettable Things to Do Before You Die…( by the way, I have both these books)

Or, 101 Things to Do Before You’re Old and Boring…I don’t have this one yet, thank goodness!
So, by now you’re probably wondering…”So what’s your point, Kari”
Well, on Oct 10th of this year, I will be “celebrating” my Fiftieth birthday (that’s hard to admit) and one of the “to-do’s” on my traveler’s life list is participate in a Marathon (and complete it!).
The perfect opportunity recently presented itself through a friend, Patricia Ewoldsen. Here’s Patricia with her new friend, Emma who was celebrating her 100th birthday at a recent Seattle Mariner’s game…now Emma knows how to live…Go Mariners!

Patricia celebrated her 50th in the same way; she ran The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training Marathon; that’s 26.2 miles! So I was inspired to get on it and “Just Do It” before I get old & boring!
So Joe and I have joined up with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training “TNT” program to run in the Portland Marathon October 5, 2008.
We’ll be training and racing for an honored teammate named Kit Brown.
Kit was diagnosed with Chronic Mylogenous Leukemia, a slow progressing blood cancer for which there is currently no cure, 6 ½ years ago. Kit has run over 14 marathons, including a couple of Boston Marathons, most of the marathons with TNT. She has run these AFTER she was diagnosed. Running and training through chemo presents a whole new challenge, according to Kit. She used to enjoy running alone, now she needs someone beside her to keep her going. She knows as hard as it is, running reminds her body that “I am Alive” and because she can. Kit encourages us in our training and extends her appreciation for the inspiration we provide her (!) that she is not alone!
This is where I need your help. In return for my dedication to this event, to the sufferers’ and survivors’ battle with blood cancers, I’m asking for your support.
Your donation of $100.00, or more, will go to this worthy cause. Of course, any amount will help. It all adds up. Seventy-five (75%) percent of all monies go directly to the LL Society. This disease affects over 100,000 lives this year, and is the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 14. However, the effectiveness of new treatment methods and advances in science bring us closer to finding the cause of leukemia and related blood cancers.
Thank you for reading this through and for considering involvement in such an amazing cause. I have enclosed my personal website address so you can learn more about the program and the disease. Additionally, I have included the Portland Marathon site for the race information http://portlandmarathon.org/
My personal fundraising deadline will be here before I know it, so I ask you to give your contribution by June 20th, the Summer Solstice – the longest day of Light!

As my Grandma Hill would say, “that’s apropos” – Shedding Light onto the cure and Renewing Life!
You may donate directly to my TNT website (will be updated as soon as the kinks are worked out) or send a check made out to “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society” (Email me for an address) . Does your Company offer matching funds? Check my site for more info.
TNT’s minimum fundraising goal per participant is $2,800. My personal fundraising goal is $50,000 ($1,000 for each year of life I’ve lived).
As you probably know, Joe and I are Realtors. How you can help me raise $50,000 is when you refer a seller or a buyer to me who closes before the Portland Marathon, I will donate 25% of the commission income I receive to this worthy cause.
I signed up May 13, 2008. We train individually daily, and with group trainings 3x/week.
The photo below shows our ”post” stair training…we did it 3x for a total of 834 steps…I was breathless in Seattle! That’s my training partner, Andi. This was our first night out doing the steps 05/22/08.

The Marathon date is 10/5/08 and my birthday is 10/10/08; having completed my 1st Marathon by then!
Ice packs, Advil, and a personal cheering section are certainly welcome as well. Additionally, your contribution helps ensure I will complete one of my life goals before I’m “old & boring” or better yet, avoiding that phrase altogether!
Thank you again and with much appreciation,
